Why It's Hard To Keep My Ring Clean

My engagement ring is nearly always not at it's sparkliest. I try to clean it at least once a week with a soft brush and cleaning solution, but I have these little pests in my house that keep dirtying it up:

Nearly every time one of my kitties come to sit on me, they get obsessed with biting at or licking my ring! It's just so pretty, I know it's hard to resist, but it's starting to get really annoying!

I bought this ultra sonic jewelry cleaner a while ago...but as you can see, I haven't even taken it out of it's box yet. After purchasing it I read that sometimes they can make your pave stones fall out, so I'm a little reluctant to try it.

Instead I just use this cleaner that I got free from the jeweler who we bought our rings from. It seems to work pretty well, but I'm not sure what I'll do when I run out of it.

I know I can't be the only one with crazy pets who want to eat engagement rings, anyone got any tips on how to get them to stop obsessing? And how do you keep your rings shiny and new looking?

  1. I'm spoiled - the fiance works around the corner from Padis Gems, so I ask him to take it in and have it cleaned every so often. Othewise, I do what you do with the cleaner. The appraiser we went to told me to use warm, soapy water and a baby's toothbrush for cleaning it at home. Your cats are so cute!

  2. I had the same problem but my jeweler said to use a simple window cleaner solution and a soft toothbrush. That's what makes my ring nice and shiny.

  3. That is so cute! My kitty usually just rubs her cheeks on my ring so it doesn't get too dirty. To keep my ring sparkly I always take a shower with it on; I know you aren't suppose to, but it has been just fine for over a year now.

  4. I just use the cleaning solution from the jeweler. But mine is in a little pot with a small basket and brush. You drop it in the basket and leave it for a few mins to dissolve the dirt and then use the brush to scrub it a bit. Makes it shiny! I think you can just go to any jewelery store and get some more when you run out. At best they'll charge you $10 for it

  5. Aw. Kitty love.

By the way, he didn't open your card for two months!???! yeah, I don't care whatever else might say. He totally doesn't deserve to go.

  6. Like Choco Lover, I have the same kind of jewelry cleaner with the basket and brush. I drop it in there on Monday mornings before I head to work and it sparkles it up nicely. Here's a little something I know most brides don't do but something to think about to keep the kittys away from it: I take my ring off as soon as I get home from work and know I'll be staying in for the rest of the night. I don't sleep with my ring on because I don't want the sheets or pillows to pull at the center stone and loosen it. So I put it on a little ring holder on my nightstand every night and then put it on in the morning as soon as I'm done showering and putting on my facial moisturizers and such. This keeps it free from the lotion, soap, etc. scummy stuff. And since I don't wear it to bed, I just usually take it off right when I get home from work. That way, when I'm cooking dinner, I'm not getting it grimy from the kitchen stuff, food, etc. I know most girls don't do that but if you did, you wouldn't have to worry about kittys :)

  7. Ditto the others on the basket/brush solution! It is in a red container, I believe it is called Connoisseurs (did I spell that right? haha). Jewelry stores usually have it, but better yet, Target and Walmart carry it for about $3.99. My mom bought hers at Jared for $6, and then we walked into Walmart and found it for cheaper a few days later...so I bought a tub! I love it...and YES be careful with the ultrasonic thing...I have micropave stones on my ring and they advised me to not use anything like that because it has the potential to shake the stones loose...yikes!
